God has allowed you to live in New York City or its surroundings in such a time as this for some reason. God has called you to be more than just a Church member; He has saved you and has asked you to be a DISCIPLE of JESUS with the same priorities of Jesus; so please, don’t just sit there, DO SOMETHING for Him. Following there are practical ideas and suggestions for you, get involve and begin to introduce Jesus to others:
Check the Contact List in your Cell Phone: How many of the names in your Contact List are not Christians? Begin to pray for those names right away, that’s your prayer list. Each day scroll down your Contact List and ask God to bless them and give you the opportunity to share Jesus with them. God will give you great opportunities to do something for them and introduce Him to them. When He gives you the opportunity, don’t hesitate, share Jesus.
Back to School Neighborhood Outreach: Have a special service for the kids in your church’s community and announce that you will give each kid who comes a free school bag, after the service. They must come with a parent or guardian and stay through the service. This will create a good rapport with the community, with the kids, and also with the adults who bring them. The best way to the parents and grandparents is through the kids.
Church Building, A Multi-Purpose Community Center, Opened 7 days a Week: Our buildings are presently a waste of space and money, they are closed most of the week, with the exception of a few hours on Wednesday, Sundays, and all day Sabbath. Open it up every day and create programs that serve the needs of your community: Tutoring & Mentoring Programs, SATs Preparation Program for High School students, Aerobics @ Fellowship Hall, Exercise Club, Healthy Living, GED Classes, English Classes, Other Language Classes, Music Classes at a reasonable cost (Piano, Guitar, Violin), and Soup Kitchen to feed the Homeless, among others. These local projects can be undertaken by a group of Young Adults.
Visible Church Sign, Light at all Times: Make sure your church has a good sign to identify the church building. The Church sign must be visible at all times and lit up at night. If your church does not have a sign, have your youth or young adult group work with the Pastor and Board to raise funds for a good sign or to fix the one you have. Many of our churches are there and no one even know they are there, lack of a good sign. A Sign can attract people to your church. Messages in a Sign can be advertise your church programs and events.
Visible Street Signs to Guide People to your Church (if permitted by local authorities): Have your youth/young adult group/Pathfinder Club work with your Pastor and Board to research and explore whether your city allows signs in the community indicating where the church is. Visible and decent signs in the community, which indicate in which direction the church is located, can also be a blessing attracting people to your church. Remember to work within the parameters of city and state law.
Volunteer to Create or Update your Church’s Website: The Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America has provided a website for each church. Your church has a website, but most likely it is not up to date. In these times, the first place where this generation looks when searching for something is the Internet. Make sure your church is well represented in the Internet and your website is up to date.
Update your Church in the Yellow Pages: Work with your church and make sure that it is included in the yellow pages, with actual information, telephone #, and address. Have your group raise funds and donate an Ad for the yellow pages advertising your church, the programs it offers, and the times of the services.
Billboards on your Church’s Front or Side: Work with your Church and Design an attractive billboard. Use the space on the front and side of your Church building to post billboards, especially where there is dense traffic. Billboard space is very expensive in NYC, yet there are several tall churches in areas of dense pedestrian and transit traffic which could advertise the church and our message through billboards; thousands of people would see the message each day and become more familiar with our churches. Lots of people out there have never heard the word Adventist Church. This would create an awareness of your church’s presence in the community. Remember to work within the parameters of city and state law.
We certainly hope you find this section helpful, as we work together to share Jesus with NYC and its surroundings. Once you apply these methods, give us your feedback and testimonies, we want to enjoy the miracles God is doing and will do through your ministry. If you have new Evangelism or Outreach ideas, please send them with us, we’ll be more than happy to post them for everyone’s benefit.
